Seagulls in How to Fish are not decoration. They steal loose fish off the ground, they raid the cooked food you stashed for mid-fight healing, and given the chance they will pick you up and carry you into the sky. There’s even a Steam thread titled “how tf do u kill the seagulls man.” Here’s how.
Every Method That Works
- Grab it by the neck. Walk up to a landed seagull with empty hands and grip it — the reference runner does exactly this, inspects it, and sells it for $8. The simplest and cheapest kill.
- Punch it. Same approach, more violence.
- Shoot it. Any gun works; the reference runner kills several incidentally with whatever he’s holding.
- Hook it with the fishing rod. Tested by the co-op group when a seagull dove for their fish.
- Dynamite. The only method with an achievement attached — see below.
If none are landing near you, back off a little. The co-op group noticed gulls won’t come down while you stand on their spot (“Maybe they’re shy. Maybe we just got to stand away.”).
Why Bother Killing Them
Seagulls target anything edible on open ground:
- During the Giant Piranha’s 5x-multiplier attempt the reference runner watches gulls circle his drops: “there’s so many of them. And then the seagulls are just going to steal them all.”
- The mid-fight healing trick — cooked food dropped on the ground — is directly countered by gulls picking it up.
- Before hauling the whale carcass, the runner clears the beach first: “I killed all the seagulls around.”
Rule of thumb: before any fight where loot or food will sit on the ground, spend thirty seconds on pest control.
If a Seagull Grabs YOU
Getting picked up is a real mechanic, common enough that the “Let me go” achievement (get picked up by a seagull) sits at 70.6% unlock — it happens to basically everyone. In co-op it happens mid-boss-fight: “Oh, guys, a seagull got me. Good luck.”
The bird carries you up and eventually drops you. Community advice is to shoot the seagull while being carried to get free faster — we haven’t verified the early release ourselves, but you keep weapon control while airborne, so it costs nothing to try. Since the achievement pops on pickup, there is no reason to avoid it.
The Dynamite Achievement
“Everyone’s dream” — kill a seagull with dynamite — is one of the rarest non-endgame achievements at 2.1%. The setup:
- Drop a fish or food on open ground as bait.
- Back away and wait for a gull to land on it.
- Throw the dynamite from a safe range — the blast downs players easily.
Throw mechanics, price and shopping locations are on the dynamite page.
