Bean
Finish the game within 1 hour
When the reference runner finished his relaxed 4-hour clear and saw this achievement, his reaction was “that seems kind of crazy.” It’s the rarest unlock in the game because it demands a completely different way of playing: the entire middle of the game — Islands 2, 3 and 4 — gets skipped.
One honesty note up front: no full sub-hour run exists in our verified footage. The route below is the community’s established plan, cross-checked step by step against what the 4-hour reference run proves about boss mechanics. Where the two disagree, we say so.
The Route
Phase 1 — Lighthouse (target: ~10 minutes)
- Fresh save. Buy Brass Knuckles only; upgrade them (
$58) and buy the Beer ($12). 360-spin your kills for the multiplier income. - Give the beer to the lighthouse keeper, get the empty can, and summon the Spider Crab. Fight close: sidestep its charge, punch its back while it’s stunned from its own dive-bomb.
- Take the boat keys and go. Do not buy the radar — every dollar is routed to weapons.
Phase 2 — Sail straight to the Volcano
Without a radar, the community heading is sun to your front-left; a brief game freeze signals you’re getting close. (The reference run reached the volcano via story coordinates instead, so treat the compass trick as community wisdom, not gospel.)
Phase 3 — Volcano economy (the bulk of the hour)
- Buy the $3 Fishing Rod. Grill catches in the lava for the 1.5x sale bonus.
- Buy dynamite and blast schools of small fish; grill and sell in bulk. Extra inventory slots enlarge each selling trip.
- Weapon ladder: Shotgun → bullet upgrades tier by tier → save $20,000 for the Assault Rifle → all AR upgrades. Lures climb alongside: Standard $15 → Professional $50 → Scientific $500.
Phase 4 — The two-stage finale
This is the part most speedrun writeups miss: the final boss is a two-stage summon. Throw scientific-lure fish into the volcano to spawn the regular Whale; kill it; then throw the Whale itself in to spawn the Magma Whale — the actual final boss. Budget time for both fights.
The Magma Whale despawns if you drive too far away, so you’re fighting it at the volcano, and its landing can one-shot you. The reference runner called the open fight “impossible without cheesing” and won by wedging it between casino pillars — a maneuver that itself took most of an hour, which a Bean run cannot afford. Keep food up, stay close, and burn it with the maxed AR. This fight is why you bank spare minutes everywhere else.
Run-Killers
- Visiting Islands 2–4 at all. The route has no room for them.
- Discovering the two-stage summon mid-run. Now you know.
- Driving away from the Magma Whale — it despawns and the whole summon chain is wasted.
- Fighting it underfed. Its landing one-shots; the reference runner died to it repeatedly with no timer pressure at all.
- The “lure it into lava for extra damage” tip floating around community guides — unconfirmed, and it conflicts with how the verified kill actually went. Don’t build your run around it.
Pairs Well With
Finishing the game grants We are so back automatically. A maxed-AR save is also the setup for Handyman (bare hands) and Easy (10-second boss kill) — do those on your main file before burning attempts on Bean.
